Günter Grass, winner of the 1999 Nobel Prize for Literature, was born in Danzig on October 16, 1927. A prolific writer, he is an icon of contemporary German literature as well as one of the very few outstanding multidisciplinary artists today. Entering the Duesseldorf Academy of Arts in 1948, Grass received formal art training and has created many watercolors, sculptures and prints. This year marks Grass’ 80th birthday. On November 28, 2007, The Taipei Fine Arts Museum will be in collaboration with the Würth Museum in Germany and the Deutsches Kulturzentrum Taipei to show 116 watercolours and 12 sculptures by Grass from the collection of the Würth Museum in Germany and private collection. These works are the most distinctive pieces in his career and also the ones with the highest literary value. Using transparent watercolour, Grass depicts the natural landscapes, flora and fauna and even man-made objects found in the German countryside, such as vast fields, clouds, hares, fungi, frogs, catfish, old coats, cloth shoes, lunch boxes and tools with signs of use. With spontaneous brushstroke and bright colors, he portrays the objects that have deep metaphorical meaning to him and describes them with poems. The texts and images inform and interact with one another, creating fantastic visions and profound meanings.
